Preserving the Precious Cultural Heritage

After reading the news report, “Ma calls for agreement on use of traditional Chinese,” (June 10, page 1) I have something to share.

The report said that President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) hoped Taiwan could reach an agreement with Beijing on teaching overseas compatriots to read traditional characters and write simplified characters. In my opinion, such proposal contradicts with what President Ma’s stated devotion to preserve traditional Chinese characters.

There is no writing system in the world that remains unchanged for thousands years long like traditional Chinese characters. The ability to understand traditional characters allows one to appreciate ancient Chinese literary work. Traditional Chinese characters are undoubtedly one of the most important cultural heritages in the world. That is also why President Ma wants to preserve them. However, the pathway he takes to get there might be wrong.

If President Ma really wants to preserve the priceless heritage, he should urge people to write traditional characters. It’s always easier for people to preserve one thing when it is often used. That is also one of the reasons that the local languages, such as Taiwanese, Hakka, and aboriginal languages, are currently taught at the elementary school level. Similarly, traditional Chinese characters should be promoted overseas. The heritage language can be preserved more easily if it is used by a great amount of people. Being able to read traditional characters is not enough. Think about the following situation. If an ESL learner can easily read English books, but he can’t spell even one word, is he a successful learner? No. Then, being able to read but not to write traditional Chinese characters can’t be counted as understanding traditional Chinese characters either.

Perhaps because of the political and economic dominance of China in recent years, simplified Chinese characters have become the mainstream. However, I do hope that President Ma can make more efforts to preserve such a beautiful and precious heritage.
