Um...first and foremost, congratulations. Second, I will be at work that Monday. I shall see you at the dinner.
Thanks in advance for the invite and hosting this grand event.

Susan Sung

Wow, another graduation to attend. The Chen Family Four will sure not miss. We plan to drive up north Friday afternoon. However, we might not be able to stay for Mon. dinner since we need to drive back home for school on Tuesday. We will have 3 seats available for whoever needs ride up North. We are looking forward to this great event, and visiting 3 nieces and nephew.

Shiao-Yi.

Congratulations! What an exciting moment is to finish a milestone. We are all proud of you. We here in Taiwan wish we could attend the great ceremony with all of you. But it seems not to be possible because of the long distance and lack of time. Have a wonderful graduation!

Philip Fei

...and the lack of tickets! Hahaha

Congratulations, Annie! All 4 of us are looking forward to join you on this special day!

Aunt Cam

Hi, Annie,

Time flies! The young girl we know of is now taking a giant step entering the adult world. Annie, CONGRATULATIONS! (It) doesn't matter where you go and what profession you choose, you'll take your intelligence and sense of persistence with you. You can do anything when you set your mind to it!

We'll celebrate your graduation on May 17 in Vienna, Virginia. Between 6/24-7/14 Angela and I should be back in Los Angeles and there we can celebrate again.

Annie's Graduation from Berkeley
Hi Family,

As you probably know, I will be graduating from UC Berkeley this May. The official ceremony for my department (Sociology) will take place on Monday, May 17th, from approximately 2pm to 4pm, and I would be honored to have all of you there! There is also a university-wide ceremony on Sunday May 16th, but I am not sure if I will be attending that one (because there will be thousands of people there, making the ceremony long and a bit impersonal).

Also, due to my department's limited budget, I will most likely only be able to get about 6 tickets for the ceremony on May 17th (yes, tickets are required to get in)... I hope this does not deter any of you from coming; I will definitely host a dinner and/or some other event after the ceremony, so that people who are unable to "get in" won't feel too left out. I do apologize for this extreme inconvenience; I guess this is just a small demonstration of the financial turmoil the California public education system is undergoing.

Please let me know as soon as possible whether you will be able to make it to Berkeley around May 17th. My mom and I are currently coordinating housing arrangements, so we would appreciate it if you could let us know BY NEXT SUNDAY (March 14th) if you will be able to come (and how many people you plan to bring). I would love to see you all there!

Thank you very much

Chile Earthquake May Have Shortened Days on Earth
The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"Perhaps more impressive is how much the quake shifted Earth's axis," NASA officials said in a Monday update.

The computer model used by Gross and his colleagues to determine the effects of the Chile earthquake effect also found that it should have moved Earth's figure axis by about 3 inches (8 cm or 27 milliarcseconds).

The Earth's figure axis is not the same as its north-south axis, which it spins around once every day at a speed of about 1,000 mph (1,604 kph).

The figure axis is the axis around which the Earth's mass is balanced. It is offset from the Earth's north-south axis by about 33 feet (10 meters).

Strong earthquakes have altered Earth's days and its axis in the past. The 9.1 Sumatran earthquake in 2004, which set off a deadly tsunami, should have shortened Earth's days by 6.8 microseconds and shifted its axis by about 2.76 inches (7 cm, or 2.32 milliarcseconds).

One Earth day is about 24 hours long. Over the course of a year, the length of a day normally changes gradually by one millisecond. It increases in the winter, when the Earth rotates more slowly, and decreases in the summer, Gross has said in the past.

The Chile earthquake was much smaller than the Sumatran temblor, but its effects on the Earth are larger because of its location. Its epicenter was located in the Earth's mid-latitudes rather than near the equator like the Sumatran event.

The fault responsible for the 2010 Chile quake also slices through Earth at a steeper angle than the Sumatran quake's fault, NASA scientists said.

"This makes the Chile fault more effective in moving Earth's mass vertically and hence more effective in shifting Earth's figure axis," NASA officials said.

Gross said his findings are based on early data available on the Chile earthquake. As more information about its characteristics are revealed, his prediction of its effects will likely change.

The Chile earthquake has killed more than 700 people and caused widespread devastation in the South American country.

Several major telescopes in Chile's Atacama Desert have escaped damage, according to the European Southern Observatory managing them.

A salt-measuring NASA satellite instrument destined to be installed on an Argentinean satellite was also undamaged in the earthquake, JPL officials said.

The Aquarius instrument was in the city of Bariloche, Argentina, where it is being installed in the Satelite de Aplicaciones Cientificas (SAC-D) satellite. The satellite integration facility is about 365 miles (588 km) from the Chile quake's epicenter.

The Aquarius instrument is designed to provide monthly global maps of the ocean's salt concentration in order to track current circulation and its role in climate change.
One of the strongest earthquakes ever
One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck Chile on Saturday, toppling homes, collapsing bridges and plunging trucks into the fractured earth. A tsunami threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean — roughly a quarter of the globe.

Chileans near the epicenter were tossed about by the magnitude-8.8 quake as if shaken by a giant. At least 147 people were killed, according to Carmen Fernandez, director of the National Emergency Agency.

The quake shook buildings in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires, and was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil — 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) to the east. About 13 million people live in the area where shaking was strong to severe, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

In Talca, just 65 miles (105 kilometers) from the epicenter, furniture toppled as the earth shook for more than a minute in something akin to major airplane turbulence. The historic center of town largely collapsed, but most of the buildings of adobe mud and straw were businesses that were not inhabited during the 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. EST, 0634 GMT) quake.

Neighbors pulled at least five people from the rubble while emergency workers, themselves disoriented, asked for information from reporters.

Collapsed roads and bridges complicated north-south travel in the narrow Andean nation. Electricity, water and phone lines were cut to many areas — meaning there was no word of death or damage from many outlying areas.

I'm looking for blue eyes

I’m looking for blue eyes
Has anyone seen him
Don’t you tell me
He gave up on me
I’m looking for blue eyes
I’ve got to find him
Cause something tells me
He’s looking for me

There was a time when blue eyes said he’d love no other
His one and only love he swore I’d be
There was a time when his blue eyes saw clearer than mine did
Storms and rain, tears and pain, bring me back his way

Looking for blue eyes
Has anyone seen him
No don’t you tell me
He gave up on me
I’m looking for blue eyes
I’ve got to find him
Cause something tells me
He’s looking for me

I’m looking for blue eyes
Has anyone seen him

I'm not Lisa, my name is Julie
Lisa left you years ago
My eyes are not blue
But mine won't leave you
'Til the sunlight has touched your face

She was your morning light
Her smile told of no night
Your love for her grew
With each rising sun

And then one winter day
His hand led hers away
She left you here drowning in your tears, here
Where you've stayed for years
Crying Lisa, Lisa

I'm not Lisa, my name is Julie
Lisa left you years ago
My eyes are not blue
But mine won't leave you
'Til the sunlight shines through your face
